This month's character trait was Caring. Addi is very caring and sweet. She is always friendly, out-going, and kind to others. Congratulations, Addi for being the February student of the month!!
First Grade had a great Valentine's Day this year! For lunch, we had a pizza party for the students, courtesy of Addi and Gracie's parents, Shawn & Mandy. Mandy and her mom, Cindy, brought LOTS of pizza and drinks for both first grade classes. The students LOVED it!
After lunch, we did a math activity with candy hearts. The students sorted colors, made tallies, then made a bar graph of their candies. Finally, they were able to eat their treats. In the afternoon, our PTA parents helped us with our Valentine's Day party. Vivienne's mom, Julie, brought a pass-the-heart game. Kody was the winner. The students had fun listening for the music to stop as it played on a record player. (Most of the students had never seen a record player before, which was fun!) After the heart game, we played Valentine's Bingo. Thank you to Easton M.'s mom, Angelie, for providing that game and the prize bags. Eason L, Karsen, Kris, and Harper were the big winners of Bingo. After the games, the students went to the multipurpose room where we joined Ms. Julie and the 3rd grade class to dance to the Cupid Shuffle. The finale to the party was snacks provided by Izabella's mom, Millie, and of course opening our Valentine Day bags. It was a fun party. Thank you to all the parents that helped provide games, snacks, and assistance! Today for our math lesson, we reviewed Base 10 Blocks. We made it a little more exciting and enjoyable by adding food to the lesson. For our 100 blocks, we substituted Cheez-Its. We used Pretzels to represent our 10's or the "longs" as we sometimes call them. We used Cheerios for the 1's. We used our Base Ten snacks to make two and three digit numbers. Then, we used them to add two and three digit numbers and to regroup. The students thought it was a fun math lesson. Of course, the best part was getting to eat their snacks at the end!
For math, we had an activity where the students had to do 100 exercises. They had a list of 10 exercises (sit ups, jumping jacks, push ups, etc.) and had to do each set 10 times to equal 100. They learned pretty quickly that 100 can be A LOT of exercises! :)
For art, the students had to count out 100 Fruit Loops to make a 100's Day necklace. They were excited to wear their necklaces home. Several students commented that after showing them off to their parents, they planned to eat them! :) Tuesday, February 7th marked the 100th day of school for the 2016-2017 year. Today, the students did several fun activities to celebrate the 100th day of school. One special surprise was a powerpoint slide show of what they would look like when they're 100 years old. The students always get a laugh out of seeing these photos. It looks even more realistic with all the missing teeth - ha! Here are some photos of our day:
